Understanding The Keurig Descale Light
For Keurig coffee maker owners, dealing with a Keurig Descale Light Won’t Turn Off can be frustrating. But fear not; there are easy ways to fix this issue and restore your machine.
What Does The Descale Light Indicate?
The descale light on your Keurig is a warning sign that indicates it’s time to descale your coffee maker. Descaling is an important maintenance process that removes mineral buildup and ensures your coffee tastes great. When the descale light stays on even after descaling, it could be due to a few common reasons.
How Often Should You Descale Your Keurig?
The frequency of descaling your Keurig depends on the quality of water you use and how often you brew coffee. As a general guideline, it is recommended to descale every three to six months. However, if you notice any changes in the taste or performance of your coffee maker, it’s a good idea to descale it sooner.
Now, let’s explore some easy ways to fix the issue of a Keurig descale light that won’t turn off:
- Reset the Keurig: To reset the descale light, follow these steps:
- Turn off the machine and unplug it.
- Remove the water reservoir and empty it.
- Wait for a few minutes.
- Plug in the machine and turn it on.
- Replace the water reservoir and run a complete brew cycle without K-Cup pods.
- Initiate descale mode before descaling: If you didn’t set your Keurig into descale mode before running the descale solution and water through it, the persistent descale light could be the reason. To fix this, follow the instructions in your Keurig manual to initiate the descaling mode and then rerun the descaling process.
Steps To Manually Reset The Keurig Descale Light
Is your Keurig descale light refusing to turn off? Don’t worry; there are some easy ways to fix it without any hassle. Here are the steps you can follow to fix your problem of ‘Keurig Descale Light Won’t Turn Off’:
Step 1: Power Off And Unplug Your Keurig
To begin, make sure your Keurig is powered off and unplugged. This will ensure your safety while working on the machine.
Step 2: Remove And Clean The Water Reservoir
Next, remove the water reservoir from your Keurig and thoroughly clean it. Rinse it with warm water and mild soap to remove residue or buildup.
Step 3: Run A Water-only Brew Cycle
Fill the cleaned reservoir with fresh water and place it back into your Keurig. Run a complete brew cycle without any coffee pods or a descaling solution. This will help flush out any remaining debris.
Step 4: Perform A Vinegar Rinse
Mix equal parts of white vinegar and water in the water reservoir. Run another brew cycle with this vinegar solution to help descale your Keurig’s internal components. This will remove any mineral deposits that may be causing the descale light to stay on.
Step 5: Run Additional Water-only Brew Cycles
After the vinegar rinse, run a few more water-only brew cycles to ensure that all traces of vinegar are flushed out. This will also help in resetting the descale light.
Using Keurig Descaling Solution Or Alternative Methods
Is your Keurig descale light refusing to turn off? Don’t worry; there are easy ways to fix it without wasting time and effort. Here are three options you can try to fix the problem of ‘Keurig Descale Light Won’t Turn Off’:
Option 1: Using Keurig Descaling Solution
Start by running a complete brew cycle with the Keurig descaling solution. Follow the instructions provided on the bottle to ensure proper usage. This solution removes mineral buildup and scale from your coffee maker, possibly causing the descale light to stay on.
Option 2: Using White Vinegar And Water Mixture
If you don’t have the Keurig descaling solution, you can use a mixture of white vinegar and water as an alternative. Fill the water reservoir with equal parts white vinegar and water. Run several brew cycles until the reservoir is empty. This will help dissolve any mineral deposits triggering the descale light.
Option 3: Using Citric Acid Solution
Another effective method is using a citric acid solution. Citric acid is a natural cleaner that can break down scale and mineral buildup. Mix one tablespoon of citric acid with one cup of water and pour it into the reservoir. Run a few brew cycles until the reservoir is empty.
Remember to rinse your Keurig thoroughly after using any of these methods to remove residual taste or odor.
Note: It’s always a good idea to consult your Keurig’s user manual or contact customer support for specific instructions related to your model.

Hi Janet,
Sorry to hear that. In that case I would suggest you contact their support for the better solution.
Any new solution, please let us know.
Thanks!!
Hi, I have a new, as of 07/12/23, K-Supreme it worked fine and I loved the machine, until at the 3 months to the day of ownership the Descaling light came on, no problem because I bought descaling liquid and spare filters ahead of time just for it. Well I have descaled it twice, done the off/on, unplug replug in, etc, etc. Light stays on. Contacted Kurig they sent video how to of what I already did and then said I needed to send pictures of proof of purchase, the SN, and a picture of a note with what’s wrong written on it referencing the Service Number they provided. I did, they then sent a denial because they said it wasn’t in an accepted format (it was PDF & jpg) which was on their provided formats. I took additional pictures and again submitted only to be told that the picture with the note they wanted had to include the whole machine not just 1/2 with clear view of the SN. So I have now submitted a picture of the whole machine with the “required hand written note”. Basically they keep moving the goalposts and dancing around the basic warranty so Kurig is NOT A TRUSTWORTHY company anymore. They make a good machine but won’t stand behind their product so BUYER BE AWARE!!!
Hi Richard,
Sorry to hear that. They are still good supporting in my case.
Can you contact them again?
Thanks,
I bought one on sale just before Christmas as a Xmas gift from my son. I love it so much! Waking up to the smell of lovely morning coffee ☕️
Yesterday, the descale light turned on, so I decided to do it today.
Hum. I kind of worry if the light will finally goes off sometimes soon!
I have it for 10 months now and I’m only using bottles of water from the businesses renowned for selling the best available drinking water.
So, I’m hoping it will work out as well as it did since last Christmas 🎄
I’m using it everyday and I would be very sad if I can’t get it working. Plus I don’t have my Walmart recipe for it anymore 😕
It was my Christmas present 🎁
What would be my options?
Thank you
Chantal
Hi Chantal,
Sorry for late reply.
So I would suggest you to try all the methods one by one. Actually hard to said which way is the best. You can comment here again the one is good for you, ok?
Thanks,
Used the method of unplugging and removing reservoir and then replacing them and it worked.
